Should I Use Dark Shingles Or Light Shingles?

Deciding on a shingle color can be a tough task. After all, you are deciding on a color that will be with you for the next 20 years. Typically, shingle color options can be broken into two different groups: light shingles and dark shingles. Both have their benefits and their drawbacks, but is one better than the other?

Dark shingles really stand out and create large amounts of curb appeal, certainly more than light shingles. Additionally, they match just about any paint color, which is good flexibility to have when you are talking about a span of 20 years. The major drawback of dark shingled roofs is how much heat they absorb. Similar to wearing a black shirt on a hot day, dark roofs absorb heat rather than reflect it. This leads to a hotter home and will end up raising your energy bills.

While light shingles also look great, they do not match as many paint colors. However, they do a much better job of reflecting heat, saving you money in the long run by keeping energy bills lower.
