Can You Roof In The Rain?

When you are looking to finish a roof installation or roof repair, it can be tempting to try and get it done as soon as possible – even if the weather is bad. Additionally, in the middle of a roofing job, you may get worried that the rain is affecting the work that has already been done. This certainly can be unsettling for a homeowner, and you may want to call up your roofer and have them come out as soon as possible. However, is this wise? Should you roof in the rain?

Sometimes emergency fixes are necessary when it is raining outside, but it is generally not a good idea to work on a roof while it is raining. Wet roofs are slicker than dry roofs, and this can put workers at risk of injury. Sometimes it is even against code to roof when it is wet.

Additionally, shingles have adhesive that must properly seal for the roof to be installed correctly, and rain can cause that adhesive to not seal properly. This could end up being a bad deal for both the roofer and for the customer.

While it may be tempting to have your roofer come finish the job in the rain, it is usually not the right decision. The wet weather can put people’s safety at risk and cause poor installation. It is best to wait until things dry out so the installation is done the right way the first time.
